One of my favorite jazz guitarists of all time, and my go-to guitarist for emulating licks and incorporating his style into my own playing, is none other than the great Grant Green.
I once watched a documentary on YouTube where they discussed his life and career as a musician. In the video, the narrator stated that after playing with all these great musicians and covering and recording many of the songs from the Great American Songbook, later in his musical career, Grant Green wanted to focus more on feel-good, funky jazz fusion and songs that were mostly based around one-chord vamps.
Now, usually, for an artist, playing songs that are based around one chord can be musical suicide, but not for Grant Green. With the right musicians and rhythm section, these songs had an incredible amount of energy and a fiery rhythmic feel.
It takes a lot of skill for a jazz artist to solo over one chord and keep things interesting without the listener getting bored. A five-minute song with only one chord could be disastrous, but not for Grant Green. His songs were usually long, funky jams filled with so much energy and feel that they would draw the listener in, grab their attention, and leave them hooked and wanting more.
The perfect example of this feel-good sound, with simple chord progressions and one-chord vamps, can be heard on the album Alive!, recorded in 1970 and released on the Blue Note label.

I promise, after listening to this entire album, you won't be disappointed. It takes skillful musicians with a bag full of tricks to make one chord sound interesting while improvising over it. Every musician in his band delivers solos full of energy and feel, incorporating bebop lines, outside playing, and more,not to mention Grant Green himself. His guitar solos are on another level and constantly keep drawing the listener in.
A great example of a one-chord song with a funky vamp is "Let the Music Take Your Mind," originally performed by Kool & the Gang. Grant Green's take on the song is a phenomenal piece of music: simple, but a funky jazz masterpiece.
